Martin Whatson is a Norwegian street artist best known for his calligraphic scribbles in grayscale voids. He started off with graffiti in the 1990s and gradually evolved into stencil art. Whatson’s work is a distinctive blend of these two styles – he often uses monochrome images with splashes of vibrant graffiti.

His pieces frequently depict scenes or subjects in black and white, which are then overlaid or interspersed with bursts of colorful graffiti. These vivid graffiti elements are usually in the form of tags, words, and a variety of shapes and patterns. This juxtaposition creates a dynamic contrast in his art, symbolizing the coexistence of the gritty, urban street life with bursts of vibrant, expressive energy.

Whatson’s work is often inspired by urban environments, and he incorporates themes of urban decay and the passage of time in his art. His pieces can be found both in gallery settings and as large-scale murals in cities around the world. The contrast in his work not only showcases his technical skill but also tells a story of the beauty that can be found in dilapidation and decay, a recurring theme in much of street art.
